Balicasag Island

Balicasag is a small island lying about 60 kilometers southwest of Panglao, Bohol. It is a small island with an area of only 25 hectares. It has a rocky coast and is one of the best snorkeling and diving sites in the Philippines.

To get there, one can take a 45-minute boat ride from Alona Beach.

This photo shows my office mates boarding one of the two pump boats we rented (Obviously, I was in the other boat).

We went dolphin watching for about an hour. Unfortunately for us, the dolphins were uncooperative that early morning. Only a few were sighted and they moved too fast to that I was not able to capture a clear shot on my digital camera.

We proceeded to Balicasag and passed by the Balicasag Island Dive Resort. This is the island's only resort with restaurant, accommodation and scuba facility. It is maintained by the Philippine Tourisim Authority (PTA). We just passed by here since this resort is a bit expensive and way out of our budget. In a little while, we approached our beach destination. From the boat, the white sands and crystal clear blue waters become visibly clear.

And finally, we arrived.....

I wasted no time in taking these pictures of the beach.

A blue starfish

According to a local, this is called Pandan

There is a local community of about 100 families living in the island. They make a living through fishing and selling rare shells and souvenirs to tourists.

We went swimming and feasted on a lunch of fish sutukil at the beach. Three of our companions also went snorkeling and were able to experience up-close the beauty of the island's marine life.

We left Balicasag shortly after lunch. I would love to go back their someday and stay long enough to discover more of the island.
