Unexplored Philippines: Mantigue Island of Camiguin

If you think Camiguin Island all about Katibawasan Falls, Ardent Hot Spring, Old Church Ruins, Sunken Cemetery and White Island, think again. Because about three kilometers off the shore of Barangay San Roque in Mahinog lies an unexplored haven for beach bums and diving enthusiasts--Mantigue Island.
Also known as Magsaysay Island, Mantigue is a small mushroom-shaped island inhabited in the north by some families of fisherfolk. Inland, the landscape consists of lush green forest. Along one coast is a pristine beach with soft white sand and shallow waters while on the opposite side is a deep drop-off suitable for diving and snorkeling. In the clear waters surrounding the island can be seen reefs with hard and soft corals, undamaged by illegal fishing methods. Tropical fish, sea turtles, and stingrays may be seen swimming in the waters around the island. Within the coral formations is the Mantigue Crack, where many fish can be seen - especially clownfish, seeingas their favored hosts, sea anemones, are plentiful here. In the sandy Mantigue Whip, stingrays as well as other fish can be seen.(Source: http://en.wikipilipinas.org)

Only around 20 families reside in the island. They earn a living through fishing, growing and selling seaweeds ("guso") and providing boat rides to tourists who want to spend a day on the island.

Getting There

Boat (motorized banca) ride from Mahinog to Mantigue is about 20-30 minutes. Fare ranges from Php 400.00 to Php 500.00 one way.

Accommodation

There are no hotels or lodging houses in the island. There is only one cottage available for guests, with 2 beds but the room can accommodate up to 6 persons at Php700/night. If the cottage is not available, arrangement can be made with the residents of the island as they can offer accommodation in their houses for a fee.
