The Chocolate Hills in Bohol

A visit to Bohol would never be complete without seeing the Chocolate Hills. Undoubtedly Bohol's most famous attraction, pictures of these hills have adorned countless postcards, magazines and tourism books.

The Chocolate Hills Complex is located in the town of Carmen, which is about 55 kilometers from Tagbilaran City.

We went there in the month of June last year. The celebration of Philippine Independence Day every June 12 explains the presence of these flags on the way up to the Chocolate Hills Complex:

Road going up to the Chocolate Hills Complex.

There are 214 steps leading up to the top where an observatory deck is built:

Climbing the steps with my officemate, Pingkoy.

The view above is simply awesome. Thousand of cone-shaped hills spread out on the open plain, looking like mystic dunes:

Wonderful view of the Chocolate Hills.

According to wikipedia.org, there are 1,776 hills spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometers but according to www.bohol.ph, there are no less than 1,268 hills mostly between 30 to 50 meters high. The hills are covered in green grass that turns chocolate brown during the dry season. Hence, the name Chocolate Hills. The most accepted theory on the origin of the hills is that they are coral reefs that were raised from the sea as the result of a massive geologic shift.
All smiles on the top of the hills...

  1. One of my friends visited Bohol last year and he really enjoyed their famous tourist spots in only one week like Hanging Bridge, Baclayon Church, museum and especially Chocolate hills. I saw their photo album which is really awesome and urged me to visit there.
