I Conquered the 34th National Milo Marathon in Cagayan de Oro City!

I joined the 34th National Milo Marathon Regional Elimination in Cagayan de Oro City last Sunday (November 28, 2010). Around 14,000 runners took part in the event.

Together with some friends, we were at the Pelaez Sports Center as early as 5:00 AM. This is my first time to join a marathon and I was really awed by the huge number of participants. I registered in the 5K race since I am still a newbie in running. The first to run were the 21K runners, followed by 10K, 3K (young children runners) and finally 5K which has the most number of participants.

Though I was left behind by many runners at the start, I resisted the urge to "sprint with the pack" and just maintain my usual running pace. From the starting line outside Pelaez Sports Center in Velez St., we turned left at the Licoan Junction then proceeded to the Marcos Bridge. It was at the bridge where I was able to overtake some participants who were already walking (probably running out of air after sprinting too early...hehehe). Turning point of the 5K race is just before the Pan de Pugon bakery along Kauswagan Highway, then back again to the Pelaez Sports Center.

I finished the race!

Though I wasn't among the top finishers, I'm glad that I was able to achieve my modest goal, and that is to finish the race. It was such an unforgettable experience for me, being a marathon first timer. I would love to join the Milo Marathon again next year with a slightly higher goal--to join in the 10k race!
