Review: Plaza Star Business Hotel in Cagayan de Oro

Plaza Star Business Hotel is the newest budget accommodation which recently opened in Cagayan de Oro City. It is located in the 3rd Floor of Divisoria Arcade, along R.N. Abejuela Street. Its location made several fastfood chains, convenience stores and the famous Cagayan de Oro Night Cafe and Night Market just literally a few steps away.

It was the day before I attempted to finish my second marathon at the Kagay-an Festival  Marathon and I already booked in advance in another pension house located a block away from Plaza Divisoria. When I arrived at the front desk at around 12 noon, the receptionist told me that the room won't be available until 2:00 PM. So I just strolled along Divisoria looking for some internet cafe to kill time before checking in. Then I saw Plaza Star's signage on the top floor of the new Divisoria Arcade. Out of curiosity, I went up the winding stairs to ask about the hotel room rates. When I found out that their rates are cheaper than the other pension house, I immediately booked one Standard Double room (Php570 good for two persons). Good thing I haven't paid for my previous bookin yet so cancellation was not much of a hassle.

The room has two single beds and is quite spacious compared to other budget accommodations I have previously stayed. The airconditioned room has Wi-Fi, LCD cable TV, hot and cold shower and a telephone. Toiletries only include two small bars of soap and two bath towels.

The room is generally clean though the toilet bowl and lavatory in the CR are obviously not spanking new. The shower also took long (too long, actually) to heat up. There are no remote controls for the TV and aircon and probably due to its limited space, there is also no closet to neatly safekeep our belongings.  At night, the noise from Divisoria Night Cafe can be heard but is tolerable enough to give one a comfortable sleep.

Overall, Plaza Star Business Hotel offers good value for your money. It has affordable room rates and everything (well, almost) you need are just a few steps away. Just like most budget hotels, though, don't expect luxurious services and amenities. This hotel is highly recommended for backpackers and budget travelers looking for a convenient, safe, decent and, of course, affordable place to stay when in Cagayan de Oro City.
