Bukidnon: Food Tripping in Lorega

Nowhere Diner and Cafe is probably the best off-the-radar food destination in Bukidnon. Located in  Barangay Lorega , which is part of the Municipality of Kitaotao, this restaurant is still unknown to most residents of the province because of its far and away location. Since it is nearer to Davao City, most of its customers are Davaoñeos who are willing to travel one-and-a-half to two hours just to have their fill of Nowhere Cafe's mouthwatering dishes. Located about two hundred meters from Bukidnon-Davao (Buda) highway, Nowhere Cafe fronts the Wildberry Gardens and Camping Grounds where my wife and I spent two days and one night of the recent Lenten Season.

We did not had a hard time finding Nowhere Cafe as the first person we asked for directions immediately recognized it as the place owned by Maam Thelma and Sir Jimmy. The restaurant sits below road level. A wrought iron gate and a tin mailbox stood outside while a pair of blue, wooden swing doors embedded with stained glasses served as its main entrance.

The interior has a warm and homey ambiance with it's small floor area providing an intimate setting. We immediately noticed the collection of framed vintage photos, ceramic mugs, cowboy hats and other knickknacks which adorned the place. We would learn later that the owners used to operate an antique shop in the US. When they went home and settled in Lorega, they bought their antique goods along. These items are now for sale in Nowhere Cafe.

Though it was customary to restrain from eating too much during that time, Nowhere Cafe's specialties are just too hard to resist. To put it simply, we gave in to the temptations. Here are some of the culinary delights we  indulged in during our stay:

Bangus Sisig

Pork Tenderloin Tips

Pork Spare Ribs

Garden Salad

In-and-Out Turon

Tuna Sandwich and Orange Juice with Lemon Wedges

Passion Fruit Shake

Though I am not a food critique, I could definitely say that Nowhere Cafe's dishes tasted oh-so-good. My wife, who has a more discerning taste, couldn't agree more. According to Maam Thelma, her practice is to personally cook the food from scratch using only the freshest ingredients. It didn't came as a surprise why people from far places would come to visit and eat in this place. In fact, when we were there, a family from General Santos also arrived and booked to stay for four days in one of their cottages.

Sir Jimmy and Maam Thelma are also very friendly and accommodating. During our late dinner, they allow us to bring in a local flavored rum which we bought from a sari-sari store outside (Nowhere Cafe does not serve alcoholic drinks). Nights in Lorega are really chilly so it is best to warm your body with some distilled spirits. My wife and I had a long chat with the couple after dinner and before we ended the night, Maam Thelma served us three kinds of passion fruits and unlimited cups of homemade turmeric tea, all for free!

How to Get There:

If you're coming from Cagayan de Oro take a bus bound for Davao. If you're coming from Davao, take a bus bound for Cagayan de Oro. Tell the conductor to drop you off in the "Kwarantinas" of Barangay Lorega. Once you reach the Kwarantinas, take the road that goes left if you're coming from Cagayan de Oro or right if you're coming from Davao. Wildberry Gardens and Camping Grounds and Nowhere Diner and Cafe are about 200 meters from the national highway and about 100 meters from Lorega Barangay Hall. Make sure to book your reservation in advance by calling or texting the owner Maam Thelma at 09164755684.
