Guest Post: Easy Day Trips from Manila

Manila is a fabulous city and those who are lucky enough to live there or who arrive in the metropolis for a holiday certainly won’t be stuck for things to do. For example, in the heart of modern Manila is Makati, a commercial centre full of shops and restaurants.

However, from time to time it is nice to escape the bustle of this teeming city and head off on a day trip. Luckily, there are plenty of options for anyone who has made the most of Manila flights and wants to explore the surrounding areas. Within a three-hour drive of the conurbation it is possible to see volcanoes, historical sites, waterfalls and much more.

One destination that is well worth traveling to is Corregidor Island. This is the largest of the five islands between the historical Bataan and Cavite shores and some geologists believe that it was once part of a large volcano. The island is located around 48 kilometres west of Manila and it stands as a memorial to the courage of its Filipino and American defenders who held their ground against invading Japanese forces during World War II. Also referred to as ‘the Rock’, it served as a key bastion for the allies during the conflict. Although it fell in April 1942, the Philippine and American forces held out for 27 days against considerable odds. Meanwhile, two years and ten months later allied forces recaptured the island. Visitors to Corregidor can see remains of big guns, military buildings, tunnels and other structures.

Another popular day trip destination from Manila is the Villa Escudero Coconut Plantation. This is the perfect place for people to relax and unwind. Located in beautiful countryside, it is around two hours’ drive from the city. Visitors can experience Filipino culture and history as they ride water buffalo-drawn carts, listen to live local music, enjoy scenic lunches and peruse artefacts in the museum.  Tours take people from their hotels in Manila to the 2,000-acre plantation and estate and then back again, making this a convenient excursion.
