A Ship House in Batuan, Bohol

A house built like a shipping vessel in the town of Batuan is one of Bohol's newest tourist attractions. We passed by this very interesting structure on our way back to Tagbilaran after visiting Chocolate Hills and eating lunch at Tanie's Restaurant in Carmen. It is hard not to notice this edifice as it is built along the highway of Poblacion Norte, just a few hundred meters away from St. James the Apostle Church.

Simply known as the Shiphaus, it is owned by Capt. Gaudencio Dumapias, a local of Batuan who became a successful Master Mariner. Having risen out of poverty through hard work and determination, the house was built out of his boyhood dream which is "to build a house that will make a difference". Having spent most of his years in the sea, he decided to build a house formed like a ship.

Originally planned as a residential dwelling, it is used to be known as BAY BARKO, meaning "ship house". But then tourists started flocking in out of curiosity so the owner decided to make it open to the public. As a local tourist attraction, it also helps augment the income of the municipality.

The house resembles a ship both outside and inside. Workers are all dressed up in navy uniform and inside there is a captain's cabin, a chieftain's cabin, kitchen, mess hall and a roof deck. Due to lack of time, however, we weren't able to check the upper level interiors.

Batuan's Shiphaus is a worthwhile stop when going to Carmen's Chocolate Hills. More than just a tourist destination, it also symbolizes an ordinary man's dream fulfilled through faith, determination and effort.
