Travel Guide: How to Get to Bulubadiangan Sandbar Island in Concepcion, Iloilo

Bulubadiangan Island, located in the town of Concepcion, is a prized gem located in the northeastern part of the Province of Iloilo. It is also popularly called Sandbar Island Resort, the name of the lone private resort which operate in the island. Sandbar Island Resort boasts of a long and picturesque sandbar with shape that shifts along with the direction of the wind. The resort's quaint setting provides an uncrowded getaway for beach bummers to relax and unwind.

How to get to Concepcion from Iloilo City:

1. From the Iloilo International Airport, ride the airport shuttle van to SM City Iloilo. Shuttle vans are parked outside the exit gate. Fare from the airport to downtown Iloilo is only 50 pesos.  

2. Disembark at the SM Jeepney Terminal and Traveler's Lounge. From here you can either take a taxi or ride a jeepney straight to Tagbak Bus Terminal. If you opt to ride a jeepney, walk across the street and go to the corner of Jalandoni Street. Take the jeepney bound for Leganes. Just to be sure, ask the driver if it will pass by Tagbak Bus Terminal.

3. In Tagbak Terminal, look for HPQ buses bound for Concepcion. HPQ buses are non-airconditioned. Fare is P110.00 and travel time to Concepcion is 2.5 to 3 hours. Last trip of HPQ Bus from Iloilo to Concepcion is around 4-5 PM.

4. If you want a more comfortable ride, take the airconditioned Ceres bus bound for Estancia and Carles. Disembark in the transport terminal of Sara. Fare of the airconditioned bus from Iloilo to Sara is P135.00. From Sara, take a jeepney or wait for an HPQ bus bound for COncepcion. Distance from Sara to Concepcion is about 10 kilometers and bus fare is only P15.00.

5. If you arrive late in the evening at Sara and there are no more jeepney or bus for Concepcion, you may ride a habal-habal (single motorcycle). Fare would be 120-150 (good for 2 persons) depending on your negotiation with the driver. 

How to Get to Bulubadiangan Island/Sandbar Island Resort from Concepcion

1. Upon arriving in Concepcion, register at the Municipal Tourism Office. It is located near the municipal hall and only a few steps away from the bus terminal. The tourism office may arrange for your boat transfer to Bulubadiangan. Contact Tourism Officer Jim Pendon at 0999-771-0086 for more information. 

2. A large pump boat which fits 5-10 persons can be hired for 1,500 round trip to Bulubadiangan and back to Concepcion. Boat ride from is 20 to 30 minutes.

3. You may also go the Concepcion Port and negotiate for a smaller boat if you're traveling solo to save on the boat fare.

Where to Stay in Concepcion, Iloilo:

1. Junbee Garilva Recreation Center is the only DOT-accredited accommodation in Concepcion. They can help arrange your boat ride for island hopping. Check their official website for room rates. You may also contact the owner Bebe Garilva at 0920-902-1681 for inquiries and reservations.

2. The other accommodation in mainland Concepcion is SBS Iyang Resort. You may ride a  trisikad (bicycle with side car) or habal-habal motorcycle to get to the resort.

3. If you have enugh time, the best option would be to stay overnight in Sandbar Island Resort. Semi-open cottages and closed cottages are available for overnight stay at P1,000 and P1,500 respectively. Each cottage can accommodate 5-8 persons. Where to Eat:

1. There are a few carinderias/eatery in Concepcion town proper but they close early at night.

2. Junbee Garilva Recreation Center has its own restaurant.

3. If you're staying in Sandbar Island Resort, buy your food supplies (including drinking water)  at the Concepcion Public Market. Fresh catch can also be bought directly from the fishermen. In the resort, you may cook your own food (free use of kitchen and utensils) or have the owner cook it for you for a fee.

More Travel Tips:

1. Electricity runs only from 5 PM to 10 AM in the island.

2. Toilet and bathroom are available for guests' comfort.

3. Water for bathing/washing is available for sale at P20.00 per container.

4. Drinking water is also for sale but expect it to be more expensive than if you buy it from mainland Concepcion.

5. Bulubadiangan is not the only island off the coast of Concepcion. The municipality is dotted with several other islands worthy of your visit. Negotiate with the boatman or ask the resort owner for the rates of island hopping.
