Wandering In Baguio: Burnham Park at Night

It was a chilly 18 degrees Celsius night when we take a stroll at Burnham Park located in the heart of Baguio City. Unlike day time when the park is most probably teeming with tourists and local folks, Burnham that night was charmingly quite and peaceful. Despite the onset of the summer season,  I could feel the coldness in the air as I was only wearing trek shorts and thin dry fit long sleeves. It was my first time in Baguio and the cool air reminded why it is dubbed the Summer Capital of the Philippines.

Burnham Park was named after American architect and urban planner Daniel Hudson Burnham, designer of the original plan for Baguio City. It is located in the city center and is probably the only wide flat land in Baguio's mostly rolling terrain.

It has a total area of 32.84 hectares and is clustered into Children's Playground, Skating Rink, Rose Garden, Orchidarium, Igorot Garden, Melvin Jones Grandstand, Athletic Bowl, Picnic Grove, Japanese Peace Tower, Pine Trees of the World and Sunshine Park. It's most popular attraction, however, is the Burnham Lagoon, a man-made lake with rowboats for rent.

There are many parks in Baguio (such as Mines View Park, Wright Park, Teachers Camp, etc.) but Burnham Park is considered as the "Mother of All Parks" in the City of Pines.

While strolling at the park, we caught a view of a fireworks display from the distance:

As we stepped outside Burnham Park via the Grandstand, we found out that one lane of the two-way street was closed to vehicles and was utilized for the display of second hand clothing for sale. This is locally called "wagwagan" or "ukay-ukay" and is often frequented by local tourists for cheap branded clothing and apparel.  I checked the goods sold and was able to score an athletic jacket and a running rashguard for less than 500 pesos.
