Manila: Afternoon Photowalk on Top of Intramuros Wall

Intramuros is the oldest district of Manila and was the seat of government during the Spanish Colonization Period. Intramuros, meaning “within the walls” in Latin, is called The Walled City because of the massive defensive walls built to protect it from foreign invasions. The walls measure 22 feet high and 8 feet wide and is built with bulwarks, ravelins and redoubts.

During my recent stay inside Intramuros, I discovered that one can actually walk on top of its walls. So one Saturday afternoon, with nothing much to do in our company’s dorm, I took a stroll on top of the wall facing the Manila City Hall Side. The ascending path to this area is located right across Bayleaf Hotel along Muralla Street. From there I made my way towards Baluarte San Andres which is almost fronting the Department of Labor and Employment Buildng (DOLE).

Here are some of the photos I took with my digicam during this afternoon stroll on top of Intramuros Wall:

I highly recommend walking on top of this wall once you visit Intramuros. It will give you a different perspective of this historic district and its adjacent areas. There are no entrance fees though some sections are prohibited to tourists. Safety is not a problem since this stretch has nearby Guardia Sibil (security guards) and there is also a Philippine National Police (PNP) sub-station at Baluarte San Andres.
