Misamis Oriental: Beautiful Memory Square and Baywalk of Balingasag

A recent work-related travel took me to the town of Balingasag, a second class municipality in the Province of Misamis Oriental. After doing an ocular inspection of the poultry site which our client is planning to buy, we asked the lot owner where could we take our lunch. Since Balingasag has a coastal town proper, our client preferred some place where we could feel the sea breeze. So the lot owner took us to a seaside park just a few steps away from the municipal hall.

The park is officially named Memory Square. It is formerly known as People's Park and is located along the Balingasag Baywalk. It is shaded by trees and concrete chairs and tables are built on its tiled and pebbled pavement. A notable landmark is the monument of a soldier with a gun, built in memory of the World War II Veterans. Within the park is an eatery which served affordable dishes, including Bangus Sardines, a local delicacy of Balingasag.

Fronting the Memory Square is Balingasag Baywalk. With concrete benches and a gazebo, it is an ideal place to view the lovely sunset of Macajalar Bay.

Nearby is the Balingasag Boulevard Shoreline. It has a stretch of gray sand beach lined with eateries. Most local residents flock here to go swimming during weekends. A night cafe is also held every Friday night.

I hope I could explore more of Balingasag on my next visit. Not known to many, Balingasag is actually one of the few heritage towns of Mindanao, with the more-than-a-century old Vega House among its most notable heritage sites. In fact, Balingasag was recently included in the "10 Heritage Towns Outside Metro Manila You Should Visit" list of the award-winning travel blog Langyaw.com.

How to Get There:

From Cagayan de Oro City, take any bus bound for Butuan City. Balingasag is about one hour of travel from CDO, passing by the towns of Tagoloan, Villanueava and Jasaan. Balingasag's Memory Square, Baywalk and Boulevard are just a few steps away from the municipal hall officially called the People's Palace.
