Photo Essay: Calle Real, The Royal Street of Iloilo City

JM Basa Street is a historic street in downtown Iloilo City. It is part of Downtown Iloilo City Heritage District, a declared heritage site lined with old buildings built during the Commonwealth era. It is more popularly known as Calle Real or Royal Street in Spanish.

The street is also dubbed as the "Escolta of Iloilo", with reference to the similar historic street in downtown Manila. Calle Real is known for its American era neoclassical, beaux-arts and art deco buildings.

The street has been known as the city's main commercial center even during the Spanish era.

It served as a shopping hub and entertainment district during the early period of American occupation of the Philippines.

The street was renamed in honor of Jose Maria Basa, a Filipino businessman-propagandist and compatriot of National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

Calle Real was declared a heritage zone by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines in August 8, 2014. The historical marker was unveiled outside the Villanueva Building.

When in Iloilo City, a stroll down memory lane along Calle Real is highly recommended.
