Cebu: Day Trip to Mantayupan Falls in Barili

The bus ticket indicates a 60-kilometer distance from Cebu City to the southwestern municipality of Barili. However, due to the heavy traffic from South Bus Terminal to Minglanilla, the bus ride took about 3 hours. We arrived in Barili past 12 noon then hailed a habal-habal motorcylce to take us to our daytrip destination: Mantayupan Falls.

Mantayupan is about 5 kilometers from the town proper. The road is wide and well-paved. There is an entrance fee of 20 pesos per person. Upon paying the entrance fee, we pre-ordered our lunch at the canteen the proceeded to check out the waterfalls.

Mantayupan Falls has two level. The first one has a height of about 14 meters and has a weak drop.

From the first falls, we crossed over some steel bridges and concrete steps which lead us to the second and main falls.

Mantayupan Falls has a towering height of 98 meters. It is said to be the tallest waterfall in the whole province of Cebu. Its powerful cascades drop to a wide basin perfectly suited for dipping and swimming.

It was a Sunday and Mantayupan was very crowded. Owing also to its easy access and proximity to the town proper, many people regularly visit the falls as getting here requires no difficult trekking.

Despite having an entrance fee, I observed that the place and its facilities such as the comfort rooms and canteen are poorly maintained. As Barili's main tourist attraction, efforts should have been made to upgrade these facilities for tourists' convenience. Proper waste disposal should also be espoused as I observed that some visitors just leave their garbage everywhere.

On its own natural state, Mantayupan Falls is beautiful and majestic. It can be best appreciated minus the crowd so it is much better to visit the place during weekdays. As I don't like crowded places, I just took a quick dip then we went back to the canteen to eat our lunch.

How to Get to Mantayupan Falls:

1. From Cebu South Bus Terminal, take any bus bound for Barili, Badian or Moalboal.

2. Cebu City to Barili bus fare is Php70.00. Depending on the traffic, travel time is 2 to 3 hours.

3. Upon arriving in Barili town proper, disembark at the bus stop in-front of the Shamrock Building.

4. Habal-habal motorcycles parked nearby can take you to Mantayupan Falls for a fare of Php20.00. Travel time is about 10 minutes.

5. Entrance fee is Php20.00 per person. The canteen has limited food choices so better bring your own food.
