Malaybalay City: Finding Peace and Tranquility at the Monastery of the Transfiguration

The Monastery of the Transfiguration is situated in Barangay San Jose, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon. It is famous for its pyramid-shaped church designed by the late National Artist Leandro Locsin. Also known as the Monastery of the Benedictine Monks, it is often visited not only by devoted church-goers but also by those who want to experience its tranquil and peaceful setting.

My wife and I recently went for a long run from our home to the monastery. Here are some of the thigs to expect once you visit the Monastery of Transfiguration in Malaybalay...

Barangay San Jose is about 6-7 kilometers from Malaybalay City proper. Once you're in Brngy. San Jose, look for this signage along the highway. From here, the monastery is about 2 kilometers away.

From the highway, the road going to the monastery is already concrete-paved. Tall trees shade the roadside once you're inside the monastery compound.

Large portions of the Benedictine Monks' lands are devoted to planting various agricultural crops. In the photo above, Mount Kitanglad Range Natural Park is seen as backdrop to the rice fields.

The rural setting would make you feel you're in a far away barrio despite being only a few minutes away from the city proper.

Coffee is also extensively planted in the area. This is where the famous Monk's Blend Coffee is sourced.

There are also some portions planted with pine trees.

As monks devote most of their time for prayer, it is strictly required to observed silence once you're in the vicinity of the monastery.

The monastery's church has a unique pyramid shaped.

Due to its picturesque setting, it is the top choice for church wedding in the Province of Bukidnon.

Mass is celebrated here from Monday to Friday at 5:20 AM and every Sunday at 8:00 AM.

With its quite and peaceful surroundings, the place is also ideal for those who simply want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city life.

How to Get There:

The Monastery of the Transfiguration is about 8 kilometers from Malaybalay City proper. Ride a multicab going to Barangay San Jose then look for habal-habal motorcycle to take you to the monastery.

The monastery also offers lodging facilities for those who want to take a spiritual retreat. They also have a gift shop selling souvenir and religious items as well as their own produce such as coffee and peanuts.
