Siargao: Gloomy Skies and Rolling Waves at Cloud 9

After about three to four hours of sleep, we woke up early at around 3:30 AM. It was our second day in the island of Siargao and we planned to leave our accommodation at General Luna early and head straight to Magpupungko Tidal Pool which is about an hour away. To our dismay, however, we were informed that our hired jeepney will be arriving only at 6 AM.

We spent time thinking about other options until finally someone came up with an idea--why don't we catch the sunrise at Cloud 9? After all, the world-famous surf spot is just a tricycle ride away.

So we hurriedly hailed a passing trike and asked the driver to take us to Cloud 9. Along the way, we caught glimpses of the skies to our right slowly showing orange streaks which made us more excited.

However upon arrival at the famous surf spot, dark clouds started to dominate the horizon and slowly swallowed the supposed-to-be colorful sunrise. It was a low tide and gloomy skies backdropped the Boardwalk.

Entry to the Boardwalk is prohibited as it is undergoing repair. However, since it was still very early and there were no other tourists around, we were allowed to walk on it for a very limited time.

The beach also looks beautiful with coconut trees standing tall along its cream-colored sands.

We came here on a non-surfing season, thus the waves were not that sizable. Cloud 9 is a term use for the perfect tubing right-hand surf break that put Siargao on the map. Surfing season usually peaks during the months of September to November.

On the other side of the beach is another surf spot with smaller breaks. It is suited for beginner and intermediate surfers. Surfing lessons are offered at a rate of P500.00 per hour inclusive of the use of surf board.

A sudden downpour occur while we were watching the surfers. We hurriedly run back to the main road to seek shelter at a nearby establishment. A little past 6 AM, our hired jeepney arrived and picked us up to take us to our next destination.
